The collection consists of: correspondence, broadsides, and leaflets, pertaining to the Workingmen's Democratic Republican Association and, Bourne's publication, The Iron Platform, from 1855 to 1864; correspondence and papers pertaining to the formation, operations, and dissolution of the American Mining, Metallurgical, and Manufacturing Co., and the Humboldt Mining and Manufacturing Co., all in Bourne's handwriting, including letters, copies of agreements, and memoranda of his meetings with officials of the firms, from 1859 to 1860; letters received, mostly 1864-1866, pertaining to his newspaper, The Soldier's Friend, devoted to the interests of private soldiers and war veterans; papers pertaining to Bourne's efforts to rehabilitate disabled war veterans, most of which are contributions to his contest for left-handed penmanship, including samples of writing and 4 portraits of veterans who lost their right arm and had to learn to write with their left hand; manuscripts of lectures and articles, including "A Lecture on the Effects of Ignorance and Education," "The American Laborer as an Artist," "Patriotic Families," "The Dweller in Ambervale," and "Fighting and Working"; and a manuscript of Bourne's unpublished book, Out of Work: or, Walks Among Empty Workshops and Dreary Firesides, written in 1855, in protest against the Tariff of 1846, describing the conditions which he says result from this commercial policy.
